Lovechild - Soul Collector

Escape Music

Rating - 7/10

Review Dougie

Lovechild is a rock band from the principality of Liechtenstein that formed the ashes of the Tess and Satrox. Soul Collector is the band's first full length album, following on from the release of an EP in 2003 and their musical stylings could perhaps best be described as heavy hard rock with, at times, a cross over into  more Euro Metal territory.

Vocalist Werner Schweizer is the possessor of a decent set of pipes, equal parts Johnny Goeli and Ronnie James Dio. and this suits the music down to a T. Guitarist Roger Kaufmann is a master of the heavy riff and the driving riff, but can be a little one dimensional at times. Luckily the two acoustic tracks on offer, Battlefield & Close, do add a modicum of variation to proceedings.

The production on Soul Collector  is strong and clear, providing your system has a good bass sound, and highlights of the set include the title track, 'Soul Collector', 'Left On The Outside'  and album opener 'Prisoner', all of which are worthy, if unspectacular examples of the bands work.  However therein lies the problem. Soul Collector is certainly not a bad album, it's just not great. All of the ingredients are in place but there is something missing that would take Lovechild above the average and give them their own identity. At this point in time there are 1001 other bands out there who are doing the same thing and Lovechild don't stand out above the crowd.

But this is the band's first full length release and gives them space to grow.
