Logan - Welcome To The Wasteland

Rating - 7/10

Review Freez

This is the 2nd album from the Scots rockers. I was lucky to catch them on tour with Alter Bridge and The Answer in November, and they delivered a solid live set, Kenny Collins (sounds like he should play for Celtic?) is yet another product from the conveyor belt of razor throated front-men from the wrong side of Hadrian’s Wall.

According to their own blurb they have made lots of friends across the pond in the land of the handgun and I can see why. That’s not to say they’ve forgotten Blighty though, their sound is gutsy rock with an imaginative contemporary edge which seems to be back in vogue at this moment.

“Something Else” doffs it’s cap to Nickelback, while Kenny intones like a jollier version of Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. “Show Me the Way’s” acoustic intro and hard bitten riff give way to a stadium pleasing chorus while “Time has Come” draws inspiration from the Velvet Revolver school of lighter aloft power balladry.

Opener “From the Moment I Wake Up” encapsulates the Logan sound from the off, showcasing the twin guitar battery. Mellow piano precludes the melancholy “Hey Mary” before the planks get spanked with some vigour by guitarists Michael Coll and Al Reilly (Rangers centre backs? STOP IT!!!).

Now Alter Bridge man Mark Tremonti has been a leading light in getting Logan’s music recorded I think he might be raising a little smile at the final track here. “Feel Me” is the best Alter Bridge track on this Logan album, they do have many similarities, imitation is the sincerest form of plagiarism after all, maybe he helped co-write it, if not it sure does sound like it.

There are eight tracks that span thirty-five minutes, which I feel is a tad short, perhaps it’s quality not quantity as the material is pretty strong if a little samey.

Look out for them live, they sound a great deal ballsier in a venue, which leads me to believe that the production on this album lets them down particularly the dumpy drumming. Don’t let that dissuade from seeking this out and giving it a hearing.
