Last Autumn Dream - Saturn Skyline

Escape

Rating - 8.5/10

Review Paul Williams

Saturn Skyline is the fourth album from Swedish / German melodic rockers Last Autumn’s Dream.

The band comprises Mikael Erlandsson on vocals, Andy Malecek on guitar, Marcel Jacob on bass and Jamie Borger on drums. You may well be familiar with the latter pair after their rhythm section exploits with Talisman, whilst Malecek used to play with Fair Warning.

I’m not sure what it is about Swedish vocalists but they all seem to have voices full of melody and raspy emotion, which ideally suit this type of music and Mikael Erlandsson is no exception.

The album gets off to an uptempo start with “For The Young And The Wild” and it’s immediately apparent that the songwriting has a great sense of melody, with big harmony choruses prevalent.

“After Tomorrow’s Gone” follows and is another fine slab of driving melodic rock which gives way to “Pages”, an outstanding rocker and perhaps the best one on the album.  The tempo drops for “Rock N Roll Is Saving My Soul”, a big stadium-type ballad with a huge chorus which builds in intensity. I can almost see the lighters in the crowd now…

“I Know A Lot About Love” is next, followed by the excellent “Critical”, on which Malecek displays some particularly fine guitar work.  Again, this is one of the best tracks on offer.

After another up-tempo song in “Supersonic”, the mood changes again for the ballad “Frozen Heart” (nothing to do with the FM song of the same name). “American Girl” features a trademark Jacob bassline – he plays it more like a guitar most of the time and is certainly one of the finest exponents of the instrument around today.

The album rounds off with “Domino”, which sounds like something that would appear on a Bob Catley album and “Still On The Run”, a piano-led, more mid-tempo track which still has the almost obligatory big chorus.

These guys really are masters of their craft and anyone who has a melodic rock bone in their body is going to love this album. Every song is well-written and perfectly executed.

This album comes highly recommended and I am sure it will appear in the end of year Top 10 list of many melodic rock fans.
