Kreator - Enemy Of God Revisited

SPV

Rating - 8/10

Review John Lewins

Following the release of the parent album in 2005 comes this CD/DVD package that updates the original album with a wealth of extras ahead of Kreator's forthcoming tour with Celtic Frost. This review will centre on the DVD portion of this package (readers wanting to check out the CD review can click here).

Firstly we have the bands show at the Wacken festival in 2005. As a live document of the current incarnation of the band you can't really fault it. The performance is powerful and musically each member excels. The only slight reservation I have is that I'm not a big fan of this kind of performance DVD, the almost voyueristic nature of watching everyone else (band and crowd) enjoying themselves seems akin to watching pornography to some extent, it would definitely be much more fun to be in amongst the action than watching!!

That aside Kreator are on fine form at Wacken, propelled by Ventors impeccable, and ferocious, double bass drum work ( the intro to "Impossible Brutality" is just immense) they power through a set that throws in old favourites like "Pleasure To Kill" and "Terrible Certainty" along with the best of "Enemy Of God". The title track itself, the aforementioned "Impossible Brutality" and "Suicide Terrorist" being able to stand tall in the Kreator pantheon as definite future classics.

The band don't seem to come across as well in the tracks taken from a TV performance bootleg, not quite having the power or menace the larger festival setting afforded them. They still don't put a foot wrong musically though and the footage is certainly an interesting snippet of a more intimate live setting (albeit one that has been artificially produced somewhat in a TV studio).

The videos section is a real mixed bag however, the promo for "Enemy Of God" being essentially an "Omen" or "Exorcist" like horror short whereby a young girl is demonised in some way (by Kreators music?? Who knows?) and carries out some evil doing. This could be passed off as the harmless and meaningless rubbish it is if you didn't also have the making of which then tries to rationalise the whole thing through interviews with the director, the band and the girl in question (time to get a beverage during this segment, believe me!).

Better is the manga-esque animation for "Dystopia" which is far more bleak and portrays a more serious message altogether, "Impossible Brutality" also manages to give the viewer something a little more interesting than the norm and certainly shows that, as a band, Kreator put a bit of thought into their visual portrayal as well. Finishing this section is "Dying Race Apocalypse" which is a clip that won a fan competition to provide the promo for this track. As it's not a professional piece of work I wont give any critique as that would be unfair.

You also get a 5.1 surround sound remix of the album for those of you who have stereos/home cinema systems that would allow it, in all fairness I didn't really notice anything that jumped out of the speakers at me, there seems to be a greater separation of the vocals in the "centre" channel and on my system the low end was enhanced (but that could be down to my subwoofer settings) whether you would find enough in the alternate mix to play it in favour of the standard audio disc is difficult to say, you've always got the option though!

If you are a fan of thrash metal and somehow missed picking this album when it was originally released then I would urge you to go and seek out this package as you will not be disappointed and will find the DVD very entertaining. For fans of Kreator who already have "Enemy Of God" on CD I would have preferred to have seen a choice available, either to be able to get just the DVD or the live show on CD separately as the Wacken show is strong enough, in my opinion, to justify its own release.
