King's Call - No Alibi

Rating - 5/10

Review Simon Bray

King’s Call are fronted by one Alex Garoufalidis who, whilst he was in L.A. worked with Graham Bonnet, Chuck Wright and Cherrie Currie, which, to be fair is something that tells us where Mr. Garoufalidis’s band may well rank in the great scheme of things. Apparently King’s Call recently shared some time on stage with bass sensation T.M. Stevens – go on then, I’m sold.

I have to say that I quite like No Alibi. The songs are uniformly good with a pleasant sense of melody, the guitar playing is uniformly excellent and very fluid but the sound is horrendous. In fact I was going to suggest that there must have been a distinct lack of money available until I noted that the whole thing was produced by Chris Tsangarides who has long been one of my favourite producers. Unfortunately on this particular record he hasn’t exactly been sprinkling the old magic dust. Quite simply; this CD sounds horrible.

This is very much a shame as there are some good moments on No Alibi especially on Destiny which begins for all the world like Gary Moore (when Moore played Hard Rock) before morphing into an 80’s influenced melodic rock tune. 80’s influenced melodic rock pretty much encapsulates what’s on offer here but what we’re dealing with lower division material rather than say the Journey’s of this world.

A case in point is Rock & Roll Star which is every bit as crass as the REO Speedwagon song of the same name and that certainly isn’t good. The intro of Never Be Alone rips off Summer of 69 but ends up in Cars territory and is fairly pleasing but shows up the defects in Alex Garoufalidis’s voice which isn’t great and merely reaches the accolade of, “passable.”

Whilst not being terrible, No Alibi just doesn’t reach the parts that it should and there are many better CD’s out there that should vie for your pounds, Euros or what not.
