“Kingbaby”, not a name I would normally relate to a rock band but, as I have learnt in the past, don’t judge a book by its cover. “Kingbaby” started off life as the brainchild of lead singer and guitar player Lance Bulen in early 2004, and he was soon joined by the other band members, Alex Irwin (drums/vocals), Matt Bachman (guitar/vocals), Allan Hearn (bass/vocals) and John Miailovich (keyboard/vocals). Together they started playing live shows in the summer of 2004 and it wasn’t long before they became a hit. With their first album, “Whole Lotta Easy”, Kingbaby have laid down a sound that is intrinsically rock, but they have added some deep south soul and blues that emanates from Lance’s New Orleans roots, stuck it together with just a little touch of country rhythm and the end result is a Rock Album that is very easy to listen too with songs that stick in your head long after the CD has finished. Lance Bullens sings with a deep melodic sound that is a pleasure to listen to, his vocals are clear and crisp with, at times, a raw gritty sound as he launches himself through the rock highs and lows (somewhere between Steve Tyler, Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi). The band have written and produced songs that are surprising with their originality and intensity and the album is a very solid collection, ranging from the gritty rock of “Bestowed” through the aggressive “Heavens Hanging”, the deep mellow, almost ballad-ish sound that is “The Well” and the Hayseed foot stomping style of “Lets Stay Home”. This is a soulful bluesy Rock album that is performed with passion, emotion and integrity by musicians who are rather good at what they do. The drums are tight, the guitars rip out all the stops, add in the Vocals and you end up with something that is, all in all, well worth a listen. They claim on their blurb that their music is “southern rock for the soul…. original, intense, tight and explosive”. I think they are justified in what they say and couldn’t agree more. |
