I’m guessing that like me, most of you know very little about Kill The Romance (KTR?), ergo a little bit of a history could well be in order. KTR were formed in Finland in 2004 by Mika Tanttu, Tomi Luoma, Vile Hovi and Antti Kokkonen. Recently they were joined by a new bass player by the name of Toni Broman. They describe their first full length CD as, “11 songs of pure aggressive neckbreaking metal,” and I’d reckon that that’s a rather fair assessment. I first listened to Take Another Life whilst taking the hound out for an early morning trot around the fields. I wasn’t overly awake as we set off but soon I had joined the Wide Awake Club thanks to the pulsating opening trio of songs, namely I’m Alive, Prey and Ghost White Coma. Truly my friends this is an opening salvo of real quality. All three songs are aggressive, loud yet tuneful in their own way with excellent vocals courtesy of Vile Hovi and powerful and intricate guitar work from Messers Luoma and Kokkonen. The main criticism I have of the rest of the album is that whilst there’s no real discernable drop in quality from there on in everything does get just a little bit samey. Riff, loud drums, growls, grunts, chorus would adequately cover a review of all the songs on the album. Take Another Life is though a very promising springboard from which the band could possibly catapult themselves forward into the big time especially if they can find songs which aren’t interchangeable. There’s definitely a big audience out there for this kind of melodic death metal and KTR are a band who could capture the imagination with future releases. |
