Jonah Matranga - Not About A Girl Or A Place
Xtra Mile
Rating - 9/10

Released at completely the wrong time of year, when you have to rub your hands together just to get a CD out of its box, this slice of Americana from former Far, onelinedrawing, New End Original and Gratitude man Jonah Matranga sweeps out of your speakers like a summer’s day soundtrack to the last day of school. Bathing the room like Rivers Cuomo, Tom Petty, Paul Westerberg and REM jamming at Brian Wilson’s beach shack, “Not About A Girl Or A Place” is yet another catchy gem to add to Matranga’s already glittering credentials. And what is probably the most remarkable thing of all is that, after producing some of the most influential and sincere music of the last 20 years, there is no trace of Matranga becoming the jaded, bitter troubadour – far from it, in fact he is the complete antithesis of the grumpy old man, and entering what appears to be another rich vein of form. If the Carolina mentioned in the chorus really isn’t a girl or a place, you are left wondering just what’s made Matranga so chirpy, and whether it is available on prescription. |
