The former Love/Hate front man sounds like he should be a porn star with his moniker, looks like he should be on the cover of Tattoo monthly and has released a solo album which is clever and engaging while nodding at his chequered past. Bad timing with Love/Hate arriving when Nirvana ruled the planet has kept Jizzy strictly second division with no chance of the play-offs. Yet despite this he remains upbeat and on this album still looks to grow as an artist and songwriter and it shows. His unique gravel throated style has matured into a superb smokey rock voice, which suits both his cock-rock faster numbers and the Black Crows influenced slower songs. The standard themes of gambling, betrayal and good times laced with some stonking riffs and a great ear for turning what should be a limp imitation into something that’s fresh and bright. There aint a bad track on it, it came as a pleasant surprise to these ears I can tell you. You too may have pre-conceived ideas as to how this would sound, and to a certain extent it meets those but has imagination and verve which barrel it along and suck you in. He’s a shrewd operator alright, Jizzy seems to know and accept that this is his lot in life but seems chuffed to bits that’s how it is. A bloody good album, the sort that you could stick on when getting ready for a night out with your mates and it gets you in the right frame of mind. And I believe he waits until track nine until he mentions whisky!!! Result. |
