Review John Lewins

Dismissed in some quarters as an antipodean Oasis with their 2003 debut "Get Born" Jet must have been laughing all the way to the bank as that album steadily went on to sell almost 4 million copies worldwide, partly fuelled by the ubiquitous success of single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" it was clear that the public at large weren't too bothered that a band named after Paul McCartney's song about his dog were also basically giving us an updated version of early 70's Rolling Stones.

On this follow up Nic Cester has been quoted as saying "the last record was written for pubs, this ones for stadiums" so what does that actually translate into you might wonder? Well in a nutshell it means take the basic elements of "Get Born" and make them bigger, not necessarily better, just bigger.

Take first single "Put your Money Where Your Mouth Is" for example, it seems that the band have tried to make this the "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" track on this record, given that it apes it in almost every way (in fact the only distinguishing feature of note is Nic Cesters very unconvincing falsetto).

A quick scan of the song titles reveals a band not afraid of the cliche, you can almost imagine what each song will sound like just from its moniker and, in the majority of cases, you'd be spot on "Come On Come On" is a mid-paced Oasis like singalong with some "Revolver"-esque eastern flavoured keyboards, "Shiny Magazine" comes over all slower tempo Byrds or Beach Boys (without the pop veneer) with slide guitar lifted straight from "My Sweet Lord" and no, "Holiday" isn't a Madonna cover either, mores the pity!

The only track to fully escape this reversion to type is "Shine On" a sensitive yet dynamic ballad that reflects on the Cesters' fathers passing and in fact its on the slower numbers that they seem more credible, less forced and more natural so it could be a case that if they decide to expand this side of the band more that they could soon become known as the antipodean Coldplay instead!! That said if you enjoyed "Get Born" you'll enjoy this for the same reasons, just don't come to this record expecting anything new though!
