Joe Lynn Turner/Akira Kajiyama - Fire Without Flame

AOR Heaven

Rating - 8/10

Review Dougie

Joe Lynn Turner has long been a bit of a vocal favourite of mine. Ever since he was a member of Rainbow (no jokes about Zippy and Bungle or rod, Jane and Freddie please!) to his debut solo album 'Rescue Me', his short stay with Yngwie Malmsteen which resulted in one of Yngwie best albums and of course his equally short stay in Deep Purple which produced the much maligned album, but one that I love, namely 'Slaves and Masters'. His return to solo recording 'Nothing  Changes' was aptly named and his last studio album 'The Usual Suspects' could equally have been called the usual album. For this album however he has joined forces with Akira Kajiyama, a Japanese guitarist, who regularly plays as part of Turner's band when tours in Japan and is a big fan of Ritchie Blackmore. Kajiyama was also responsible for co-writing much of the Holy Man album with Mr. Turner.

Right then hands all those who would like a new Rainbow album? Thought so, get this bought then.' Fire Without Flame' is the closet thing since to classic rainbow since the Red Dawn debut from about ten years or so ago and easily captures the Rainbow sound. Admitted it’s a lot more guitar orientated than Rainbow was and does vary things by including some blues and boogie style numbers that owe more than a hint to Deep Purple, but still very Blackmore-esque dear readers. It also features arguably Turner's  best vocal performances in years. Given that Mr. Blackmore is off doing his medieval music these days and shows no inclination to return to his rock roots then Fire Without Flame will fill the gap nicely.
