InMe - Daydream Anonymous
Graphite
Rating - 7/10

After various record company difficulties ‘Daydream Anonymous’ finds InMe switching to Graphite Records and teaming up with Jens Bogren (of Opeth ‘Ghost Reveries’ fame) to record the album at Fascination Studios in Sweden. Almost inevitably, Bogren has helped to flesh out the bands sound and the album highlights the more intricate and technical elements that were absent from previous efforts. There has also been a change in the bands line-up with bassist Joe Morgan now replaced by Dave McPherson’s younger brother Greg. The new era for InMe is ushered in with the progressive sounds of ‘Myths And Photographs’, a suitably overblown and bombastic opener. Even this early in the album one thing is abundantly clear and this is that as a vocalist McPherson has come a long way, now possessing a greater clarity in his delivery. The momentum keeps going with the soaring ‘Far Reaching’ and even if lead single ‘I Won’t Let Go’ does sound like a Fall Out Boy B-side it does the job of making sure the old fans don’t feel left out. ‘Turbulence’ is a sombre guitar-led ballad with a simple yet effective melody whilst the chunky metal riffing of ‘Cracking The Whip’ and ‘In Loving Memory’ demonstrate the bands technical proficiency. There are two longer tracks here that really stand out and show that InMe are determined to dispense with their radio friendly three minute songs. ‘Thanks For Leaving Me’ is something of an epic with real anthem-like qualities and this is matched by the explosive finale of ‘Toast To Broken Glass’ that ensures the album closes in dramatic style. ‘Daydream Anonymous’ is an album that showcases a band in transition; as they begin to move away from their early U2, The Alarm roots and develop into a harder-edged and complex rock beast. On the evidence provided here, InMe have taken the first steps in developing a more mature sound. The real challenge will be taking their audience along with them. ‘Daydream Anonymous’ was released on 10th September. |
