There is a well-known saying that goes something along the lines of “we make our own luck”. It’s a saying that I think was purpose made for anyone trying to “make it” in the fickle but ultimately, one hopes, rewarding world of music. One such artist who is trying to do the above is Ida Maria, a 23-year-old Norwegian singer-songwriter. Not one to be complacent and wait for record companies to come to her Ida released two limited edition singles on her own label, Nesna Records (“Oh My God” and “Drive Away My Heart”) which became favourites of radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq. Her latest single is entitled “Stella” and is being released by Waterfall/RCA records. After a few play through it becomes very obvious that a major new talent is coming over the horizon. “Stella” tells the story of God giving the world away to a 43-year-old prostitute from Manhattan in return for a night with her. An intriguing storyline if ever there was one, which is sung in such a fashion that the yearning that God is going through comes through with a tangible sense of deep emotion. It’s the vocal delivery that nails it as Ida can switch from silky smooth to borderline gravely with a dash of angst from one bar of music to the next. Her melodies are plain and simple giving the song the ability to make an instant impact. “In The End” sees Ida sounding like a more modern and indie tinged Eva Cassidy but on “Small People’s Smiles” she sounds like Bjork at her cheekiest and most accessible. Ida is definitely a singer songwriter to watch out for, and at the tender age of 23 she is writing crafted, intelligent and fun music that some of the biggest names in music don’t come up with till they have grown and experienced decades in the music world.
