This album by teenage Californian five piece Heavy Heavy Low Low is certainly an interesting and challenging listen. Attacking every song with a youthful zeal but no little skill they draw influence from punk, death, thrash, some acid jazz and a pinch of themselves to create one unholy row. But it’s never dull, predictable or reliant on a formula. On first listen it is easy to dismiss it as re-hashed 80’s American hardcore (Stormtroopers of Death spring to mind) with some System thrown in the mix and for sure they have “borrowed” the unusual time signatures of the Armenian-American funsters but there is so much going on in the layers it takes time to appreciate it all. The lyrics on most tracks are completely gaga, keeping well away from the controversial racism and sexism employed so enthusiastically by Billy Milano with SOD, they come up with some interesting homespun garage ideas while remaining A-political. It’s all done with a tongue firmly planted in the cheek and is all the better for it. That they are youthful and exuberant comes across so vividly, their smiling naivety a welcome change from the usual shoe-gazey self analysing of current emo-metal. If dissonant guitar/shouty lyrics with unusual key changes in songs that last two minutes sounds like your bag then this album is for you. As a debut effort it is both fresh and different and gives them plenty to build on. Though at just twenty two minutes, they would have to sort out a few covers to perform a value for money gig. Finally, how could anyone resist a band featuring the Fritter brothers!! (Insert your own punchline here eg. Chris Fritter really batters those drums!!)
