Heartland - Mind Your Head

Escape

Rating - 8.5/10

Review Paul Williams

Mind Your Head sees Heartland celebrating their 10th studio release and all the trademarks which have marked their consistently strong career are all very much in evidence, you will be pleased to hear.

Chris Ousey once again supplies the stunning vocals, backed by Steve Morris’ great guitar work. There’s plenty of up-tempo quality rock songs on offer here, which you will be familiar with (and have come to expect) if you have been a fan of the band over the years.

The album kicks off with the excellent “Magazine” which builds from the excellent early guitar work into a somewhat funky melodic rocker with a bit of a brooding chorus. “For Pity’s Sake” is next and has that up-tempo feelgood factor of early FM.

“Frozen Hearted” has a great driving rock rhythm about it, whilst “Last Man To Fall” bursts into life as you expect something far slower from the intro. It develops into a dark rocker with some superb guitar work.

The pace drops for the ballad “A Fathom I Fell” on which Morris’ guitar playing again excels and Ousey’s vocals beautifully match the tone and subject matter. It’s back to more up-tempo rocking for “So The Story Goes”. The quality continues with “A Mountain To Climb” which has a brooding swagger and is one of the best tracks on the album.

“A Richer Vein” is yet another quality track with a superb bass rhythm driving it along. There’s no let up in the songwriting as “Run For Your Life” and then “Time To Believe” both rock out with great aplomb.

The album closes out with “The Best Is Yet To Come” which really rocks along and would be a stormer live, I reckon. The song’s title may also well prove to be a statement of intent for the next album, the way the band is going.

Like Pink Cream 69, the band are now 10 albums into their career and seemingly still going from strength to strength. Here’s to the next 10 albums if their quality progression is to be maintained !!!

Overall all existing fans will be delighted with this latest release which has all the hallmarks of classic Heartland and if some how the band have passed you by thus far, then it’s a great introduction which will have you searching out their back catalogue as a matter of priority !!
