In the current post-hardcore/metalcore climate we live in, it seems bands will try anything to get noticed, well Greeley Estates are definitely at the forefront of this scene. The second album from the Phoenix mob has ridiculously long song titles, nothing to do with the songs lyrical content whatsoever, and the obligatory heavy cookie monster vocals. “Blue Morning” is a case in point, a
typical album opener, dreary vocals that get heavier
throughout, shredding guitars that become progressive in
places and a drummer who thinks he’s in Obituary.
As the album goes on
the vocals become higher in pitch and even whinier than each
preceding track, especially on “Go West Young Man” and “If
We're Going Out, Lets Go Out In Style”. The album as a whole is
pretty much metal by numbers, we’ve heard it all before
really, there’s nothing new here. It just gradually gets
worse as each track passes by, “Let
The Evil Go East” even sounds like a blatant As I Lay Dying rip
off and it is questionable as to how this lot managed to get
to album number two.
If you had to pick
out a standout track though “Mother Nature Is A
Terrorist” is perhaps the only effort that doesn’t follow the exact
same pattern as every other song on the album as it has vocals you
can actually hear and riffs that sound vaguely original. “Go West Young Man, Let
The Evil Go East” is nothing special and in all honesty best
avoided at all costs! You’re better off trying some home
grown talent like Architects or Devil Sold His Soul, who
actually make the genre worthwhile.
