Gorefest - Rise To Ruin
Nuclear Blast
Rating - 9/10

Gorefest, the Dutch death metal heads return with their follow up to “La Muerte” but, before I continue, I have to say that I had never heard of Gorefest until this showed up in the post and I am now a converted Fest fan! Gorefest have been around since the early nineties, and after a seven year hiatus they released their comeback album in 2005. However from the sheer brutality of opening track “Revolt”, you’d never know they’d been away, sounding like Hatebreed playing Sikth and Obituary Covers The title track highlights Ed Warby’s excellent drumming, even throwing in some Hellhammer style black metal drum blasts. “The War on Stupidity” is another heavy metal masterpiece, but much more guitar orientated than the rest of the album, featuring some amazing riffs reminiscent of early Dimmu Borgir but, for me, “Babylon’s Whores” is the standout track. It goes straight for the jugular and just doesn’t show any remorse! “A Grim Charade” is much more melodic than the rest of the album, with a Slash like solo slapped in the middle of a doom epic and “The End Of it All” brings the album to a close, leaving the listener hungry for more Gorefest!
“Rise
To Ruin” is 100% killer and 0% filler. It fuses elements of
death metal with black metal, layered with structured and
technical guitar work before being sprinkled with hardcore.
This certainly is a new chapter in the Gorefest history
books and lets hope they bring their live show over to the
UK, so people can witness the sheer power of the Fest! |
