Ghost of A Thousand - This Is Where The Fight Begins

Rating - 7/10

Review John Lewins

I'd always imagined Brighton to be a fairly benign English coastal town, especially after all the Mods verses Rockers foolishness in the 60's seemed to die down. A town with a fair proportion of the blue rinse brigade retiring gracefully to granny flats by the sea and lots of the traditional English seaside fayre such as rock and candy floss etc.

However there's clearly more to Brighton that meets the eye if Ghost Of  A Thousand are any example of the youth of the south. They certainly aren't a band informing  their hardcore/crossover punk with ditties about bingo and donkey rides.......Over the course of the twelve tracks on 'This Is Where The Fight begins'  the listener is treated to some fairly uncompromising tunes and it sort of begs the question, what about life in Brighton has inspired such anger and disaffection?

That question aside Ghost Of A Thousand have delivered one of the most abrasive albums in the punk genre so far this year. In the current emo-laden scene to hear five guys  this upset is a welcome breath of fresh air. Spiky riffs and pounding drums abound, all topped off by Tom Lacey's growled vocal that could strip flesh at 20 yards, stirring stuff indeed!!

You may have noticed that I've not actually mentioned any song titles so far as points of reference. The intention behind this is quite straightforward, the tracks are all equally strong and whilst there's not really a stand out track, there's not a duffer either. Whilst one could expand on the driving drums and relentless riffing of “Bored Of Math” for example,  I think it would be fairer to say that this album is as uncompromising as it gets and, as a whole, deserves and demands your attention.
