From Behind - Game Over

Lion Music (LMC167)

Rating - 6.5/10

Review Simon Bray

Somewhere in my loft I have loads of vinyl albums that don’t fit in with the feng shui of my current abode. Those albums, mostly from the late 70’s to late 80’s include a few by Samson, the odd Mammoth LP and like most people of my age, some Nazareth. So I was quite intrigued when Steve told me to expect the new From Behind CD to wing its way to my house.

From Behind are led by former Samson/ Mammoth lead singer Nicky Moore and recently added Manny Charlton of Nazareth fame to their ranks. The band is rounded out by a number of Swedes who have recently seen service with Paul Di Anno. Clearly their credentials cannot be knocked, but what can we expect from From Behind? Guitars down tuned in a sad attempt to be hip? Added scratches and beats to appeal to the kids? Collaborations with the latest rapper on the scene? Nah, don’t be silly. These chaps are obviously too long in the tooth to change their ways now and they deliver exactly what you’d expect from them – an enjoyable hard rock album that could easily have been made twenty or thirty years ago – and I don’t mean that as a criticism.

Opener Queen Bitch has the kind of lyrics that haven’t seen the light of day for many a long year. Apparently the lady in question is the “wench of all wenches” and “the bitch of all bitches.”Next up is Catwalk, a song that instantly burrows itself in your head so that you can’t think of anything else!

What You’re Doing sounds like AC/DC (if they still made music), whilst Picture is a lovely almost country style ballad. I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of the blues but Boneman delves straight into the big book of blues clichés by having the title character, “on my shoulder, doing the devil’s work.”

The songs on the second half of the album aren’t quite as instant as the early ones but this is a very enjoyable if somewhat anachronistic release. I imagine that From Behind are a hoot live. The production courtesy of Manny Charlton is crisp with the guitars well up in the mix and Nicky Moore is singing as well as he has ever done.

This is music played by real musicians who are clearly enjoying their work and not afraid to swim against the prevailing trends and taken at face value this is an album well worth investigating.
