Frank Turner - Photosynthesis

Xtra Mile

Rating - 8/10

Review Stuart Bowen

Being part of a band such as Million Dead and then turning his back on their cult following was always going to prove to be easier to assess in hindsight, rather than the heat of the moment.  Frank Turner clearly had something to say and a way of saying it that didn’t fit with his previous incarnation, and he immediately found critical acclaim for last year’s debut solo effort “Sleep is for the Week”, making the transition from frontman to folk troubadour with ease.

The imminent release of that often “difficult” second album is preceded by the release of his new single “Photosynthesis”, a Doc Marten-stomping anti-anthem for twentysomethings everywhere in the vein of The Levellers.  Whilst the subject matter is quite stark, voicing the worries of families, savings and old age, it is approached in such a lyrically adept fashion that, as the fiddle solo raises the mood in the track’s final third, there is inherent hope and optimism in the closing refrain.  “I will not grow up” sings Frank.  Good, says I.
