Fate are a Danish band, once hailed as the Danish equivalent of Van Halen and, unsurprisingly given the name of this album, this is there fifth release. On the upside V contains eleven well written, well played an, courtesy of Tommy Hansen, well produced tracks but that is where the good stuff ends. To quote the press release that goes along with the release, V features the incomparable voice of Per Johansson and, for once, the press release is absolutely right, Per Johansson has an incomparable voice Damn right its incomparable, unfortunately for V though it is incomparable in a way that makes the whole CD virtually unlistenable to this reviewer. Johansson has a strange high pitch twist to his vocals that I really do not like and ultimately he really spoils this album. No matter how good songs such as Butterfly, Burned CHild or 'Memories Won't Die' may be, with the vocals so prominent in the mix the album simply washes over and through the listener without really being absorbed. It would be interesting to hear a different singers take on this material as is may be, under different circumstances, that this set of songs could really work, as it is V is not for me. All of that being said taste is very much a personal preference and some people may like the twist Heniksen adds to proceedings but I would very much recommend a try before you buy policy with V as if like me you find the voice difficult to deal with then you may just waste £15 or so by buying blind... |
