Faro - AngelLost

Review Dougie

The Faro main man is the charismatic lead singer Chitral “Chity” Somapala who is well known as the lead singer of the melodic progressive metal band Avalon. He was born in Sri Lanka to a famous musician's family and his parents were well respected artists and this is the second album under the Faro moniker. The line up on the debut release included Spanish session musician and songwriter Frank Rohles and  Daniel Flores, who is best known for his drum activities in prog metal band Mind's Eye and bass player Peter Hahn . Whilst Somapala's other work has been in the prog metal mould Faro is definitely much more of a melodic rock project but as I’ve not heard any other material by him I cannot really make many comments.

“Chity” has a good voice somewhere that lies somewhere between Ronnie James Dio and Jon Bon Jovi in style - strange but true - and the musicianship on offer on this album can only be said to be of the highest calibre featuring, as it does, alumni from the likes of Jaded Heart and Bonfire. The production job by Markus Teske, who has previously worked with the likes of Vanden Plas, Ian Parry's Consortium Project and Symphony X is also equally impressive.

But, and you all saw this coming, the songs on 'AngelLost' nothing to write home about and none of them really stick in memory after they are over. It says something when the best track on the album is a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing In The Dark, and this reviewer may be many things but a Bruce Springsteen fan he is not, so that really doesn't say much about the original material the band have served up. Basically the material could all be described as environmental friendly to coin a phrase in that it's all been heard before in one way shape or form and simply recycled from a thousand other bands in this genre. My advice to “Chity” is find a songwriter to work with in the Magnus Karlsson mould for future projects and he may just have something more appealing to the people who buy these albums.
