Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High

Universal

Rating - 9/10

Review John Lewins

Get ready for the sound of 2007. “Infinity On High” is here and, like it or not, you will be hearing a lot from this record before 2007 is over... Hot on the heels of infectious first single “This It Ain't A Scene It's An Arms Race” comes Fall Out Boys fourth album and, from the opening introduction to “Thriller” courtesy of Jay Z, its clear that their ambitions are set so much higher this time around.

With “Infinity On High” Fall Out Boy seem set to take the unexpected success of “From Under The Cork Tree” to a whole new level. They've honed their pop-friendly hook laden post hardcore even more, to deliver a set of songs that remain in the brain for days on end.

Melodies are in abundance here and if anyone doubted FOB's ability to top their previous best then be prepared to be unequivocally disproved. I would argue that, after the first spin, you'll be nearly convinced but by play number three you will be utterly immersed in these songs and will have surrendered totally to the insistent hooks.

The biggest surprise for me on this album is Patrick Stumps vocals. Despite his shy and retiring general demeanor he is showing confidence of epic proportions in his performance throughout "Infinity On High". This is perhaps best demonstrated on piano led ballad “Golden” his voice conveying a warmth, power and emotion that has only been hinted at previously.

There's only a couple of places where this album stutters a little, FOB manage to rip themselves off on “The Carpal Tunnel Of Love” reusing a riff that they first aired on “Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued” and “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs”, which echoes the latter sections of Panic At The Discos “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”. Aside from these minor aberrations "Infinity On High is a superb collection of songs and clearly, an early contender for album of the year.
