Evile - Enter The Grave

Review Steve Cummings

The UK has a history of inventing things, subsequently exporting them overseas, only to see said inventions improved upon and then imported back to this country. Take football, cricket, railways and thrash metal as typical examples.

Almost thirty years ago three young Geordies, in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge, exploded onto the scene with their 'Welcome To Hell' opus and changed metal forever. The band was Venom and they built upon the legacy of British stalwarts such as Motorhead and Black Sabbath and the noise they produced has gone down in history. Since then however can you name one really good UK thrash band. Onslaught, Sabbat, Morecambe's D.A.M. and oh yes Lawnmower Death all tried and failed to a greater or lesser extent and it was left to those living in the shadow of an almost as famous bridge, Golden Gate, in San Francisco to take this new sound and unleash it upon the world.

Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Flotsam And jetsam and Megadeth all succeeded where the Brits failed and each produced a series of what are now considered classic albums. Even in Europe the Germans, as in almost all things, out performed the Brits, Kreator, Destruction and Sodom carrying the flag for Europe.

Fast forward to 2007 and Huddersfield hopefuls Evile are trying to put all that to right with their full length debut album 'Enter The Grave'. They have certainly gone about things in the right way bringing in famed producer Flemming Rasmussen to handle making the album and putting together riff after riff of old school, full on thrash. Rasmussen you may recall was the man behind the desk for all of Metallica's best work - that being anything before the multi million selling Black album - and you can certainly tell the influence the 'Tallica guys have had on Evile. Right from the opening riff to the title track this is a band that obviously love their thrash heritage. Stacatto, low-register, quick, complex guitar riffs, driving drums, short sharp powerful melody lines and flashy solos - yep check,  all there and in place.

As you would expect from a band of this nature the lyrical content is, shall we say dark. Death, destruction, mayhem and a whole lot of headbanging and moshing. But it works. Sure the band haven't as yet got the light and shade that Metallica expunged on their first few albums. There's nothing as exquisite as Fade To Black, For Whom The Bell Tolls or Welcome Home Sanitarium but it even took Metallica until their second album to reach that level of maturity. What Enter The Grave is, is Kill 'Em All for the new millennium - it has that much potential.

Evile may not as yet be the complete package but they are, arguably, the most promising British Thrash band in the last two decades and only time, talent an whole lot of luck will see if they can reach the dizzying heights of their forebears....
