Buffalo guys Every Time I Die have a unique take on metalcore. Just a quick scan of the track listing on this, their 4th full length, demonstrates that this band has a sense of humour and in this sometimes overly serious scene this is a welcome breath of fresh air. What helps as well is that there is a mix of styles displayed within the grooves on “The Big Dirty” that combine to create a memorable record. After what seems to have been a series of formulaic releases in the genre this approach shows that, if bands are prepared to evolve and forge a slightly different path, then there is light at the end of the tunnel signposted “career longevity”. In fact the biggest disappointment here comes with the guest spot of Alexisonfires' Dallas Green on “Inrihab” given that the track seems to have been polished beyond recognition and smacks of a commercial cash in - so much so that I'm fairly sure it'll turn up as a single at some point in the near future. Stylistically it's sing-a-long choruses and rounded guitar sounds are totally out of place with what goes before and after. But that slight diversion aside what we have here is metalcore as filtered through modern southern rock and The Bronx style boogie punk with some full on hardcore vocals. “Buffalo Gals” is possibly the best example of this but whether its the insistent riffing in “Imitation Is The Sincerest Form Of Battery” or the strident drums and shout along chorus of “We'rewolf” Every Time I Die have brought something a little bit different to this particular table and its well worth tucking into. |
