Had I received this about three months ago, it would have been reviewed as the “Sound of The Summer”. Demented Honour is without doubt one of the albums of the year, a collection of filthy riffed, good time, bar-room rock ‘n’roll tunes that beg to be played loud. Utterly unpretentious, Erol Sora doesn’t just play the guitar, he wrings it’s neck to produce some storming tunes, “Guilty”, “Broken Dreams” and “One Way Ticket” are future classics, rock ‘n’ roll in all it’s beer drinkin’, hell raisin’ glory and this is the kick in the ass that the music scene really needs. Lifted from the ZZ Top/ Georgia Satellites sensibility’s and a wadge of L.A mixed in to produce uplifting foot tapping rock. Intertwined with the rockers there’s elements of Thin Lizzy and Bad Company. Sora has honed his craft with former members of Black Sabbath, Foghat, Survivor and more recently ex Uriah Heep frontman, John Lawton. And he’s used this time well, casting the guitar to one side for a moment; he’s a more than capable lead singer too. Both with the rockers and the more soulful tunes. But the guitar is his forte, in a very natural way. Whist being fleet fingered, this isn’t an example of techno wizardry, it’s a fest of blues laden, soulful guitar nodding a head to the afore mentioned Thin Lizzy and in truth reminds me of a “let loose” Neal Schon. A similar demonstration of agility and control. There’s a cracking mix of tempo within “Demented Honour”, the slower tunes giving a brief rest between the rockers. “Rain” and “Along The Way” reveal a talented song writer, adding mood with the keyboard and acoustic guitar creates a very real sense of texture. He’s managed to avoid the weepy ballad, which keeps the album very honest and without an obvious, commercial leaning. It’s evident to me that this is the music that Erol Sora likes, he’s recorded an album the HE wants to listen to, and I’m convinced he’s not the only one who’ll end up liking it. In essence, a confident album of feel good, no nonsense rock music. Erol Sora, remember the name. |
