Elle Milano - Acres Of Dead Space Cadets

Brighton Electric Music

Rating - 8/10

Review Mike Clark

Having recently reviewed the lead off single from the album, “Meanwhile In Hollywood”, and being suitably impressed the release of the unusually titled “Acres Of Dead Space Cadets”, was something to be anticipated, even if vision is a little disturbing. As per the three tracks on the single Elle Milano have continued down a very eclectic path and are hard to pin down sound wise, albeit that things are suitably catchy and could do some serious chart damage if the opportunity arose.

Kicking off with a strong opening duo, “Laughing All The Way To The Plank”, a very bouncy pop rock number with strong vocals and a lot of musical variety followed by the single “Meanwhile In Hollywood” is impressive. Then comes “My Brother, The Astronaut” which is basically the title track and starts in a mellow fashion but quickly picks up the pace and aggression in a somewhat haphazard but entertaining way. Points of strangeness are the occasional Justin Hawkins like vocals and the weird Stephen Hawkins like robotic spoken section, then again maybe it's the Hawkins section? The variable, eclectic and bouncy style continues with “Stepkids In Love”, “Carousels” and “Curiosity Killed The Popstar” with strong vocals and entertaining musicality. There is even a little hint of Muse coming in at points to go with the other  weird and wonderful miscellanea.

“Katsuki & The Stilettoed Stranger” has a much more punk feel about it with unusual timing changes and breaks, a good fun track. “I Know It's Good But I'm Playing It Down” is more mainstream in it's sound and would fit very well in the charts with clever vocals and a lot of melody. “The Nightclub Is Over” rolls up next and is much more introspective and chilled though the vocals don't work quite as well than they do on the faster paced songs.

“Wonderfully Wonderful (All The Time)” fires up next and should go down well live with an initial dance beat turning into a faster paced rockier number. The album closes out with “This Is How It Ends” which again is one of the more melancholic numbers. All in all though this is a pretty good album with a lot of variety though whether it is more indie, rock, pop or whatever is open to debate and it certainly won't be appealing to a lot of the regulars here but there is a lot of potential with this band and I, for one, am looking forward to catching them live.
