Review Freez

What’s with Sweden! It used to be simple, Volvo’s, Abba and dodgy ‘tached porn stars were the norm. Now, every other album I get is from a new set of blonde rockers from the land of the Saab and most of them are quite cool. This album is no exception, in fact it’s bloody good.

The influences are writ large from this four piece, a swagger from the Stooges coupled with some Hives style vocals, all topped off with a nod of the head to Velvet Revolver!! Theirs is a BIG sound, some classy tracks and no little self belief. It is hard to believe that this is their first CD release. Some lethal guitar motifs and a gallon of hooks per song are standard here and the more you play it the better it gets.

Each track crackles with a vitality and energy that leaps from the speakers like a damp tongued puppy happy to see you. And it’s infectious, even the slow tracks end up bounding along and dragging you along to the party. They have taken what could have been a jaded formula and injected it with steroids while ploughing vodka down its wrinkly throat simultaneously. Opener “Dirty Needs” establishes a platform, all driving guitars and throbbing bass aplenty. The bluesy “Driver” sways like a drunken bum at closing, taking Foghat into the 22nd Century, all sax and sex.

The playfully titled “We’ve Planted a Bomb In Your Radio Station” could persuade indifferent play-listers to give it a try but the quality of the song should do it alone. “Midnight Haze” does exactly what it says on the tin, the sound of a smoky bar having a cool time. “Incognito” has a superb repetitive riff which creeps up on you & gets under your skin, instantly a live classic methinks.

There are eleven tracks on show here, each one possessing something to keep your ear glued to the speaker. Perhaps the structural formula of quiet-loud-quiet-loud becomes a little weary but hey that’s not much to complain about. They are on tour in Europe with the excellent Truck Fighters in October, if they do dates together in this country, I shall be quickly in the queue! Excellent stuff.
