Deserves To Die - Surrender All But Our Skin
Grind That Axe
Rating - 6/10

Debut album from this Yorkshire five piece who have been around since 2005 and already have an appearance at the Leeds / Reading festival behind them and have played with Enter Shikari, The Architects and Lamb of God. It is fans of the latter that will find much to appreciate here with the Deserves to Die sound being very much one of relentless, uncompromising, in-your-face Metalcore. ‘Decisive Hour’ kicks the album off with the guttural vocal of frontman Drew very much shaping much of what is too follow. A competent slab of brutal modern metal the only down side is that it fades out much too early at the four minute mark. But instead of being a case of Metalcore-by-numbers the band inject just enough melody to make the whole thing more palatable to those with a more refined ear, hitting something of a purple patch at the half way mark with the impressive trio of ‘The Irony Isn’t Lost On Me’, ‘First Affliction’ and ‘Bleeding Me Dry’. When they tone down the aggression slightly the result is somehow more satisfying than on the likes of ‘Wrong Time For Regret’ and ‘She Screams Hatred’, two of the more ear-splitting moments here. On the production side the overall sound of the album comes across as a little flat at times and the fade outs are a definitely something of a let down but in terms of songwriting and execution Deserves to Die have made a solid enough start.
