Demonic Resurrection - A Darkness Descends

This is the third release from India's Demonstealer Records that I have been given to review over the past few weeks, and it is by far the strongest. What Demonic Resurrection have shown is that you do not always have to look towards either America or mainland Europe for good metal bands. Although predominantly a death metal band a lot of the music is quite progressive and this produces some sublime moments. Many of the tracks start out as traditional death metal songs before progressing through a number of different styles. They touch on gothic, power metal and even a bit of folk in places and manage to change between each style without songs becoming disjointed. Musically they are undoubtedly very talented, but I found the highlights of many of the songs to be the clean vocals that appear mainly in the choruses. They have used a number of guest vocalists, including female vocals on “Apocalyptic Dawn” and “Behind The Mask Of God” to good effect. Overall A Darkness Descends is an interesting album that brings new things to the table each time you listen to it. However, with a running time of around an hour, it maybe that the album is just that little bit too long. With quite a few of the tracks clocking in over the six minute mark perhaps some judicious editing to shorten the length of these would have made for an even better record.
