Metal Heaven
Rating - 8/10

Decoy are a relatively new Swedish rock band based around the proven talents of songwriter and guitarist Torben Enevoldsen (Section A, Fatal Force) and vocalist Peter Sundval (Grand Illusion). The final addition was an old friend of Torben’s, Thomas Heintzelmann on drums, who previously played in Torben’s all instrumental group and jumped at the chance of renewing their professional friendship. Decoy have recently signed for Metal Heaven and “Call of the Wild” is their debut recording. Judging from the first three tracks, wild by name and wild by nature seems to be the correct pseudonym to use because they start off full pelt and assault you with a full frontal energetic melodic rock blend that at times harps back to the 80’s heyday. If you were expecting, as I was, a more melodic, laid back, chilled out sound then think again, you ain't gonna get that here. Torben mashes out some incredible guitars that help to provide the beat and backbone throughout the release, but mixes in some incredible riffs, power chords and solo’s that are very Malmsteen/Satriani-esque in their perfection, in fact I would best describe his solo’s by using a catchphrase once linked to a famous chain of Chicken outlets started by a certain Colonel – they are “Fingerlikin Good!” The vocals provided by Peter are out of this world. He has a voice that seems content whatever range it is performing in, right from the slower, moody vocals in “The Real Deal” right down to the Neolithic screaming in “Call of the Wild”! I feel that they have created a finely tuned Melodic Rock release that is a damm good listen. I have seen a few reviews that knock the materials for being too full of clichés, both within the titles of the songs and the lyrics themselves which has reduced the value of the release. What a load of utter crap. Who cares that they guys don’t have the skills of the poet laureate when it comes to prose? I certainly don’t. As a package this CD has all the necessary ingredients to make it a great release and, what’s most important, it is easy and fun to listen too. Too much time could be spent digging deep to find fault, but then again if you look long and hard enough fault can be found anywhere. Far better to spend more time looking at the positive points. Decoy have put together a sound that deserves some of your time. It is a great rocker, shades of Journey here and there with some light progressive undertones floating in the ether. Overall some outstandingly performed melodic rock with on the edge vocals and a real pleasure to listen too. |
