Danava - Where Beauty And Terror Dance

Kemado

Rating - 7/10

Review John Lewins

Danava are a new name to me and with this lead single from their forthcoming 2nd album (“Unonou” due February 2008) they've given us a taster for what seems to be a psychedelic tinged rock melting pot given that these two tracks (sonically, not literally) cover the best of what was emerging from a (Purple?) haze at the back end of the 60's.

The single is a mixture of all that was good about Black Sabbath in their first four albums, building from a fuzzed up guitar riff that adds loose drums and mildly distorted bass to great effect. Like a more insistent Monster Magnet or a less polished Trouble Danava take their Sabbath influence to their own place and fashion a terrific track in the process.

The b-side is apparently a cover of a song originally done by Strays, but as I've not heard the Strays version I can't comment on how faithful a reproduction it is. Nevertheless what you have here is a rollicking tune all about the biblical Walls Of Jericho tumbling down, coming over more like a Pink Floyd  tune from around the “Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” era.

All in all a very refreshing single in today's climate and one that promises a treat in store for psychedelic rock fans when Unonou is released next year.
