Dacia and her cohorts are a new name to me and I expect you as well. Dacia herself is of American extraction whilst her backing group are of the German persuasion. The UK’s very own Lemmy appears on the ballad Losing You so that’s good nest ce’pas? Tres bien. You will of course note that from the mark above that I quite like this album; in fact I like it a lot but just as a word of warning, this album is not really a rock album; it’s really a pop album which features loud guitars on most songs. What it does have though is an abundance of catchy tunes that worm their way inside your head and refuse to leave. At various times Dacia’s voice reminded me of Andrea Lewis from the Darling Buds (how obscure is that?) and Sharleen Spiteri from Texas (and I really, really don’t rate them) and allied to the poptastic backing of the WMD’s this is a fun, quirky album but you would have to decide whether it is a HardRockHouse.com CD in reality. Actually it must be, because we reviewed Dirty Pretty Things and they don’t rock either! Track one is Who’s to Say which rattles along at a fair old pace and is sort of reminiscent of Republica but less dance orientated. Sadly this is followed by the only real dud on display Rockabilly Bitch which doesn’t really go anywhere but is annoyingly repetitive; however, it is the only real blemish on an otherwise very good album. However, I would say that when editing this piece three days later Rockabilly Bitch is growing on me. Stop and Stare gets the thing back on track even though it sounds worryingly like a girl band song - as in fact do a few of the better tunes on here. The next three songs are darker, more intense and less instant but none the less worthy but it’s the acoustic ballad Sorry that makes the album come back to life. In the hands of a name act this would have massive hit potential as would Intensify a few tracks later. My Reality is power pop of the highest order and How Long is life-affirming pop music. The communist is a quirky Europop effort (and is also the subject of the bonus video on the disc) but it’s probably Losing You that may interest the majority of HardRockHouse readers as it’s a soft ballad featuring Lemmy! Yep, you read that correctly – but what a little cracker this is! Lemmy’s gruff voice mingles with Dacia’s girly voice to great effect. It’s probably too dark and slow to be a single but it rounds off the album wonderfully. Initial copies come with two bonus tracks, namely the heavy guitar based First Time and the more groove based The Universe and both of these songs keep the quality high. As I said earlier it’s up to you as to whether you accept this as a rock album but for me it works just fine. Dacia & The WMD is released on September 22nd via MTM/PsychoActive |
