D-A-D have actually been around for quite a long time and originally began playing together in Copenhagen in the early 80’s under their original name of “Disneyland After Dark” but had to change it to D-A-D in 1989 to avoid a lawsuit from some firm that makes cartoons and other films (the name of this firm slips my mind at the moment, but I’m sure you can work that one out for yourselves). Scare Yourself is the bands 9th studio album and has been out in Denmark since 23 May 2005 but is only now getting its full European release. The album starts off really well with “Lawrence of Suburbia”, a dark, moody, heavy beating rock song full of full on bass and intimidating guitar rock which bodes for good things. Track 2, “A Good Day (To Give Up), cranks up the tempo a lot, is lyrically very strong and shows off what these guys can really push out when they want to. “Scare Yourself”, track 3, takes it back to a slower, darker, pulsating rock beat which is very pleasant on the ears Then, for me, it all goes downhill. I’m not saying that the other tracks are bad, but the sounds don’t say anything, they don’t stick in your mind and are not very memorable at all. They seem to move away from the Rockier side that they have proved they can play, and slip into the “Guitar Band” genre that is at the forefront nowadays. Now, there are a plethora of guitar bands around nowadays, some good, some bad, some indifferent, but none of them really to my taste. This album faded into obscurity for me after “Scare Yourself” and unfortunately I spent the rest of the album compiling a “where have I heard that before” list. If you are a fan of D-A-D then I am sure you will enjoy this. If you are a purveyor of Scandinavian Rock, you should maybe give it a try. For me, I have just deleted it off my MP3 player. |
