Two Tales Of One Tomorrow is the fourth studio album from hard rockers Cornerstone, led by noted British vocalist Doogie White, whose previous credits include Midnight Blue, Yngwie Malmsteen and Rainbow amongst others. White is joined once again by long-time collaborator Steen Mogensen (ex-Royal Hunt) on bass, with a variety of hired hands assisting on other instruments, including Kasper Damgaard on guitar and Allan Sorensen on drums. Cornerstone’s style is similar to Rainbow or Deep Purple, with sometimes even a hint of Savatage thrown in for good measure. White’s vocals often evoke memories of Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan and even Joe Lynn Turner. The songs are up-tempo driving rockers, supported by a healthy dose of keyboard work. The album kicks off with “Misery”, whose instrumental opening gives way to a brooding rock anthem with a pretty decent chorus. This sets the tone for the rest of the album, which continues in very much the same vain. Lyrically, there’s epic tales of mysticism and sorcery, further compounding the Dio references. The title track is probably the most impressive on offer with a fairly infectious melody and good chorus. My one real criticism of the album is that many of the tracks are very similar in style, such that I found it hard by the end of the album to remember what any individual track actually sounded like. There can be no doubting the quality of the songs or the performances, but for me, the album is a little too repetitive and the lack of any real stand out tracks holds the album back. The production is good but there’s just that spark missing. This is a shame as I had really enjoyed the previous Cornerstone albums I had heard, so I was expecting to rate this album even more highly than I have done. Having said that, it is still a quality release in terms of the musicianship and performances and I am sure that for some, these qualities will outweigh any reservations I might have highlighted. |
