Cloven Hoof - Eye Of The Sun

Escape Music

Rating - 8/10

Review Dougie

Cloven Hoof, now there’s a name from my past. I own at least one or two of their albums but I guess I’ve not listened to them for many years. Cloven Hoof were, what could be branded, a classic heavy metal band and little has changed over the years but, with 'Eye Of The Sun they have made a very good and very clever album that mixes elements of classic heavy metal with more modern sounds.

The only original member left from days of yore is Lee Payne, who has written or co-written all the material on the album whilst the rest of the band were all involved in the excellent Psychofantasy album by Tom Galley, who is also responsible for producing this particular album.  Eye Of The Sun is an album chock a block full of excellent riffs and stunning vocals. Opener  'Inquisitor' is a fine example of the bands new sound with vocalist Matt Moreton varying his style between the gruff and a more melodic approach This style continues throughout with  the songs being built around classy riffs and catchy hooks and show a host of influences, Metallic , Judas Priest ,Iron Maiden, Queensryche et al all spring to mind.

This album is by far and way one of the heaviest releases from Escape and may be a bit of a shock to the more AOR inclined but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this album and it is what can only be described as a great heavy metal album. Both heavy and melodic at the same time.! Matt Moretan proves to be superb throughout whilst Andy shortland is surely a future guitar hero in waiting
