Circular Logik is the
latest project from multi instrumentalist
Phil Vincent and is a companion piece to his Tragick project
released earlier this year. On first listen it’s easy
to see why One has been issued under a different name to either
the Phil Vincent or Tragick monicker as this album shows a
completely different side to Vincent's song writing. The songs are varied
across all of the thirteen
tracks and, whilst it sits firmly in the hard rock genre for
the most part there is little
sign of the AOR that comprises his solo work and in general
the whole affair is more blues influenced
than Tragick. Indeed the songs cover a whole gamut of styles, from
the almost sleazy glam rock of opener Welcome Home and
Killing Me Inside and the album closer It’s All Over to the acoustic driven Zeppelin-esque Right Here and
the heavier Led Zeppelin influence Led Wait. Then there's
the pop rock stylings of Time
Killer and the out and out blues that is You Make Me Weak.
On the whole One is an excellent collection of
songs with arguably the highlight being the prog rock/Pink Floyd influenced Won’t Let You Go/Lost
Without You. What comes over especially is Vincent’s love of Paul McCartney, with many of the
vocals passages and arrangements reminiscent of the
recently divorced former Beatles maestro's songs. On top of
that there is also the excellent guitar work that is
featured throughout and a production that proves to be clear
and uncluttered, helping rather than hindering the feel of
the album. In truth One is a bit of a winner and it's easy
to see the "Logick" in giving this an 8/10 mark.
