Chimaira - Chimaira

Roadrunner (RR82628)

Rating - 8/10

Review - John Lewins

This, Chimaira's third album, proves that  there's still plenty of life in this mythological beast! From the furious intro of first track "Nothing Remains" which features a good mix of tempos and an eastern flavoured instrumental mid-section through to the last track "Lazarus" with its keyboard intro and various voice effects there are many moments on this album that are testament to Chimaira's collective imagination.

The musicianship is of the highest order throughout and as mentioned before there is evidence that Chimaira are consciously trying to inject some variation into their music, most notably with the track intros giving each track a distinctly different feel despite the album being firmly in the "thrash" genre (or supa-nu-xtreme metal as I believe its called this week!!).

As a band Chimaira are not afraid of melody and intelligent use of keyboards and various other electronic effects abound, particularly in the aforementioned "Nothing Remains" and "Lazarus" but also in the intro to "Bloodlust".Even the guitars try to give us different textures wherever possible, the intro to "Everything You Love" having a bass sound reminiscent of Metallicas "The Thing That Should Not Be" and the sound used by the guitars in the opening to "Bloodlust" is pure NWOBHM (this is a good thing!).
