Choaswave - The White Noise Within

DVS Records (DVS014)

Rating - 6/10

Review Paul Williams

The White Noise Within is the debut album from Chaoswave, a Danish / Italian 5-piece band formed in 2003.

The band received some decent press and critical acclaim for their debut, self-titled EP at the back end of 2004 before releasing this 9-track album in December 2005.

The band are pure prog metal, with comparisons being drawn with bands like Lacuna Coil and Nevermore. Perhaps the most interesting element of the band are the twin vocals of Fabio Carta and Giorgia Fadda which keep the sound fresh and different from many other bands in their genre. I can’t really say I’m a fan of European singers who are not singing in their native tongue, as the accents (and often the lyrics) do frequently get “lost in the translation”, But I would have to say that. Chaoswave are one of the best examples of how this can work. It helps that the production is excellent and you can hear every note from both singers, even when they are harmonising. A top production job.

Henrik Rangstrup, the sole Dane in the lineup, is also responsible for all the lyrics and the guitars and proves to be a quality performer who shows more concern for the songs than his own ego and keeps the solos fairly short which add to, rather than overwhelm, the songs themselves. Rangstrup varies his style between providing some excellent melodies and then some killer riffs. Definitely a star on the rise.

Mention should also be made of drummer Raphael Saini who drives the songs along with some thunderous drumming and some great staccato technique, especially during “Mirror”.

The only low point of the album is the short, dreamy / atmospheric “The End Of Me” which doesn’t fit in with any of the other tracks, although it does serve to highlight the immense introduction to the following track “The Wasteland Of Days”.

I’m not normally a fan of prog metal such as this, but Chaoswave are clearly talented musicians and have the quality of songs to stay around a while. There’s enough melody on offer here to get the attention and interest of melodic rock fans (like me), whilst you could not argue that the band are clearly aiming at the prog market.

Definitely one of the better releases in the genre that I’ve heard.
