Capdown - Surviving The Death of A Genre

Fierce Panda

Rating - 7/10

Review John Lewins

Hot on the heels of their third album "Wind Up Toys" comes the third release of Capdown's new single culled from said album, "Surviving The Death Of A Genre", which is backed with a great reggae version of Kelis' "Trick Me".

Built on a cutting riff "Surviving The Death Of A Genre" is the harder edged Capdown that's very much in evidence on "Wind Up Toys". Underpinned by some insistent drumming and an elastic bass line the Milton Keynes quintet show they can do straight ahead alt-rock ala Hundred Reasons with as much aplomb as their more trademark ska-punk.

Far more interesting, for this reviewer at least, is the driving, skanking reggae of "Trick Me". The lyrics taking on a different feel altogether when spat out by Jake with the overall effect of giving you a genuine feeling of rebellion and revolution rather than the Kelis original which comes over more like an ode to a cheating boyfriend, stirring stuff indeed!

So whilst not being the most accomplished Capdown release from "Wind Up Toys" this single is easily recommended on the back of its B-side as "Surviving The Death Of A Genre" is not a bad song but the cover of "Trick Me" eclipses it for me!
