Capdown - Keeping Up Appearances

Rating - 8/10

Review John Lewins

Its been a long while since Capdown's last album "Pound For The Sound" blasted like a breath of fresh air through our collective craniums back in 2001. Since then the Milton Keynes quintet have largely been a live entity but over the last two years they have been working on a new album, "Wind-Up Toys" which is due for release early next year.

After download only release "Home Is Where The Start Is" back in September follows this, the first single proper (due for release December 4th), and its clear the new music is still very much in the Capdown tradition. For the uninitiated that means a heady mix of uptempo funk, reggae, ska, punk and metal and in the wake of Adequate Seven's recent demise Capdown are hard at work cementing their position as the UK's leading lights in this kind of crossover arena.

With its uptempo feel and lyric railing against superficiality "Keeping Up Appearances" does the perfect job of keeping one foot firmly rooted in what has made Capdown so highly regarded, taut, insistent rhythms and hooky choruses are still the order of the day for example, but they still maintain a vibrant and fresh sound that brings something slightly different to the table, b-side "Serious Is Not A Sin" has an underlying reggae feel for example.

So if a singles' job is to raise awareness and expectation of an upcoming full length release then "Keeping Up Appearances" more than fulfils this role, all I can say is, bring on the album!!!
