Brain Drill - Apocalyptic Feasting

Metal Blade

Rating - 6/10

Review John Consterdine

It seems after Metal Blade gave the world Cannibal Corpse, they are now looking for the band’s modern day successor and that’s where Brain Drill come in.

Recommended by Cannibal Corpse's own Alex Webster as being “pretty fucking sick”, Brain Drill really are the bastard offspring of that band with the cover looking like a cross between Cannibal Corpse’s “Tomb Of The Mutilated” and “Eaten Back To Life” and even having both songs and titles that are very reminiscent of the Corpse. Opener “Gorification” is a death metal feast with some brilliant drumming and weird guitar solos that sound like they’ve been torn straight out of a Pac Man game. Don’t get me wrong, this album is a corker, but it does seem like Brain Drill, and their fellow label mates Fleshcrawl, have been signed as a modern day equivalent to Cannibal Corpse.

However it is worth a listen, with some interesting songs like “Apocalyptic Feasting” which amalgamates some extreme screaming and guitar work that you really would never expect to find on a death metal album. “Forcefed Human Shit”, other than being a “lovely” title is a minute and a half of intense Gay For Johnny Depp style metal.  Though Apocalyptic Feasting sounded rather good through the opening few songs, the formula had worn a bit thin by the end of the album, with only “The Depths OF Darkness” really sticking out as a memorable track.

This isn’t a bad album by any means but then again it isn’t the best death metal album ever. It's certainly worth listening to though but check it out via Myspace before purchasing “Apocalyptic Feasting”.
