‘A Twist In The Myth’, the German Power Metallers eighth studio album and first since the much acclaimed ‘A Night At The Opera’ in 2002, is (with one exception) definitely a case of preaching to the converted. Almost all of the songs here offer all of the epic qualities, faultless technical competence and fantastical lyrical images that they have been associated with for almost two decades. ‘This Will Never End’ is a monstrous mid-tempo opener with vocalist Hansi Kursch immediately getting into his stride, delivering the lyrics with equal parts passion and aggression. There is a Celtic-tinge and medieval feel to ‘Turn The Page’, one of the early highlights, that sees the band return to a more simplistic structure and sound. Next up is ‘Fly’, and this is not at all representative of the overall album, with a more contemporary feel, and proved to be a controversial choice with the fan-base as the lead single. ‘Fly’ stands apart from the rest of the CD and shows that Blind Guardian are more than capable of changing their style should they choose to do so, providing a tantalising glimpse of an alternative future for the band freed from the expectations of their devoted followers. But if ‘Fly’ is the one track that may have alienated some of the die-hards then there is still much here that will leave them feeling well satisfied. ‘Straight Through The Mirror’ is a definite Kirsch showcase, ‘Carry The Blessed Home’ is a tip of the hat to early Queen and ‘Skalds and Shadows’ includes some traditional folk elements whilst immersing the listener into the world of ‘Lord of The Rings’, it’s lyrical imagery being full of myths, legends, storytelling and taverns. However, even this is eclipsed by the tracks ‘The Edge’ and ‘Lionheart’, both of which are Blind Guardian doing what they do best, dark and brooding anthems that will be cherished by the faithful. So overall ‘A Twist In The Myth’ is a competent display of European Power Metal from one of the true exponents of the genre. If you like this sort of thing then you will pretty much know what to expect although newcomers are advised to proceed with caution and will need the patience and perseverance necessary with this type of release. However, for those who are prepared to invest the time, then this is an album that will get better with each repeated listen. A Twist In The Myth is released on September 5th |
