In a previous review our webmaster alluded to the fact that some reviewers contributing to the site prefer the AOR end of the spectrum Eh? I wonder whom he could mean? Well even when the said reviewer picks which album he wants to review he still manages still get the odd dud!. This self titled Blanc Faces record was one that I wanted to hear after reading numerous great reviews and it being likened to Glass Tiger. So now that I've finally got my hands on it - well the production is spot on and the musicianship is flawless. Vocalist Robbie La Blanc has a great voice, somewhere between ex Bad Company singer Brian Howe and the late Paul Young of Mike & The Mechanics fame Sounds good does it not, and it would be if any of the twelve songs on offer had any hooks or stayed in the memory after listening! This album is very much at the pop rock end of the AOR spectrum and the material, as advertised, is akin to that served up by the aforementioned Glass tiger and Mike & The Mechanics but none of the songs Blanc Faces have committed to tape are up to scratch. This is the type of material that has been heard a MILLION times before, most often however executed far better. In fact after listening to the album at lest twelve times it still leaves me Blanc! What Blanc Faces, and by extension their record company needs to do is execute some quality control with regards to the song writing and maybe hook the band up with somebody who knows how to write a good song and then, just maybe Blanc Faces will have something worth listening too |
