Bitune - Fantastica

Review Paul Williams

Bitune are a four piece nu-metal / punk type band from Germany who are produced by Ace from Skunk Anansie, after he was impressed by a demo the band gave to him.

This review is for the three-track single being issued in advance of a full-length CD and a UK tour in April. The title track, Fantastica, is a fast tempo, all-out affair with vocals on the edge (and sometimes over it) of screaming throughout, with just the occasional quieter, more melodic passages.

The playing is fairly decent and vocalist Sascha Wiegand seems pretty adept at delivering the requisite melody and screams in turn, but for me, Bitune are another pretty run of the mill band in a genre which is already overflowing with far too many bands who sound way too alike.

Second track “Stars Are Stereo” is a far more laid back affair with overtones of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and even Nirvana at times. I think the limitations of Wiegand’s voice are exposed especially on the softer opening verses, although overall I much prefer the song and its style to the title track.

Third and final track, “Still”, is back to a very similar style to the title track and is again fairly typical of the genre.

Overall pretty average unfortunately and nothing as yet to elevate them above so very many more bands in the genre.
