I first heard of Biomechanical many years ago when a friend told me they were one of the most amazing bands he had ever heard. He found out they were playing at Trillions (a rock bar in Newcastle Upon Tyne) and attempted to get me to go along to the show. I don’t remember the reason for not going, it was probably lack of cash, but I do remember they made their mark on the city as every time I bumped into a rock pal they kept asking why I hadn’t been to the Biomechanical gig and that I had missed something really special. You would have thought that after that chapter I would have made an effort to look into the bands music but I have to confess I never followed through. After sitting through their latest album “Cannibalised” I am now regretting not going to those gigs and checking out their music. Without the hindsight to compare it to what has come before I have the luxury of telling you what this music does to me in the present. In three words I would describe this album as “fucking mind blowing” (or is that two words?). The last time a band melted my face and had me reeling after pummeling me ears with the musical equivalent of musical atom bombs was ToMera. Biomechanical shocked me with their intensity, instrumental technical prowess, sheer reckless abandon, attitude and musical creativity. To be honest they have everything you would want from a band that play heavy metal that twists and turns at speed and that walk musical pathways that others don’t have the balls to tread. The opening salvo of “Fallen In Fear”,” The Unseen” and “Cannibalised” had me pinned against the living room wall. With “Breathing Silence” however the band mix in beautiful acoustic passages before hitting you over the head with their metal hammer that even the mighty Thor might have difficulty in controlling. “Predatory” is a song that will have you sitting back and admiring the sheer bravado of the shredding guitars and the drumming madness that goes through rhythms that had me smiling from ear to ear. “Slow The Poison”,” Reborn In Damnation” and “Consumed” would make the perfect soundtrack to those fever dreams you endure after too much Newcastle Brown Ale. They are positively demonic and sound the like the music of ones nightmares brought into reality. Nothing prepares you for the musical genius of “Through Hate Arise”. This truly can be called epic cinematic rock. The orchestration that accompanies this track will have the hairs on the back of you neck standing on edge within seconds and the scale of this track will just leave you speechless. Special mention must go to the guitar solos which are exceptional and glorious in their on the edge delivery. If this track doesn’t give you goose bumps I reckon its safe to say you are dead to the world. Closing the album is the intense “Violent Descent” which is aptly named. This is the music to accompany those souls who have been damned on earth for the deeds they have done to others. Recent events in the news have me thinking there will be a few of those when the day of reckoning comes. From beginning to end “Cannibalised” is a musical triumph and is an album that puts Biomechanical firmly at the top of the food chain. If you like challenging metal music then this album has to go to the top of your “to listen to” list. Truly a work of musically dark art. Let us know your views on Cannibalised
