Biffy Clyro - Puzzle
14th Floor
Rating - 9/10

The first thing that's obvious on this, Biffy Clyros 4th album, is that the Kilmarnock based trio have raised their game significantly over previous efforts. This is evident right from the off with the multi-faceted “Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies” all the way through to the acoustic led closer “Machines”. On their previous albums there have been flashes of occasional decentness, but nothing that hinted that the guys had an album of this magnitude in them. Puzzle is such a leap in terms of development from Biffy Clyro's previous work that you could almost doubt that its the work of the same band. “Puzzle” delivers on a number of fronts. For fizzed up pop punk look no further than “Saturday Superhouse” for Snow Patrol-esque slow burners check out “As Dust Dances 2/15ths” or “Love Has A Diameter”, for a new take on the Jams “Eton Rifles” riff check out “A Whole Child Ago” for a Foo Fighters-esque mid tempo rocker check out current single “Folding Stars”. This just gives you some idea of the variety and breadth available on this album. “Puzzle” is, quite simply, a masterstroke by a band at the peak of their powers. Whether the guys can build on this career peak remains to be seen but one thing is for sure, they deserve to achieve widespread success on the back of the sheer strength of the songs that make up “Puzzle” as anything less would be criminal. |
