With Bowling For Soup you get a good idea of what to expect when you spin their discs, you are gonna get a bunch of hook laden tunes that cover a some fairly untroubling themes with lyrics that will have you smiling with their wit and inventiveness. To this end the new album does exactly what it says on the (soup) tin! from the opener 'Almost' through to the last track there is a sense of humour that pervades throughout and you know the band are having a good time with the music as well. Special mention has to be made of the intentionally awful rhyming of Texas and breastes in 'Almost'. Truly classic!. No doubt some people will dismiss the band purely for these reasons preferring their music to deal with serious issues but I'm not one of them, every now and again its refreshing to hear a band who don't take themselves too seriously, although the single 1985 does touch on the feeling of alienation of some people when they feel rooted in the past and can't identify with present day trends, again special mention has to be made for the lyric "wears a miniskirt made of snakeskin, and who's the other guy singing in Van Halen?". So in short if you want to have a good time listening to an album that is both intelligent in its execution and witty in its delivery then this has got to be your current choice. It even has a half decent rock ballad in, ridiculous. |
