Agnostic Front have been around in one form or another for twenty five years (on and off) and, for the uninitiated, were instrumental in the mid eighties New York “Crossover” scene which combined elements of hardcore punk and thrash metal to abrasive effect, generally helping to bring a more grounded social conscience to the metal scene back in the day. The trials and tribulations of Agnostic Front are well documented elsewhere but, as a band, are they still providing us with anything relevant after all these years? Well, that depends, you see. If you find bands posturing about how hard they are, a la “Warriors” and “Revenge”, or how great it is to be in the hardcore scene, “For My Family” and “All These Years” for example, all set to mainly mid tempo chugging chorded riffs, then you'll fit in with Agnostic Fronts world view just fine. Admittedly not all the songs have these lyrical themes but to be honest there's nothing here either that will impress you with its insight or aggression. Miret sings about anger and frustration, especially on the likes of “Dead To Me” and “Outrage”, but doesn't really communicate these feelings to the listener that well. The rest of the band don't really help him out much either as, in the main, the song arrangements barely rise above average. It is this combination of average tunes, delivered with average execution that leaves you with a very average album indeed. It pains me to say it, as “Cause For Alarm” is a strong personal crossover favourite from the original scene, but it seems that, as a band entity, Agnostic Front are running on empty. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that they have anything relevant, or new, to say in 2007. Almost all the songs on “Warriors” have a retrospective slant to them - “Forgive Me Mother” for example seems to be about regrets arising from Miret's time in jail on drugs charges, an that was over 15 years ago! A major disappointment. |
