Aerosmith - Rockin' The Joint

Sony (SNY97737DD)

Rating - 9/10

Review Mick O'Connor

The old shit, definitely the old shit.

Excuse the opening line ,but I'm just thinking out loud to a question posed by Mr. Tyler, "Do you prefer the old shit or the new shit"? And judging by the  response from the crowd at this joint in the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, they  are all as old as me as well.

So what we have here is another Aerosmith live release, recorded at the aforementioned venue in January 2005. So you say to yourself, well I've already got a couple Aerosmith live albums so what do I want with  another? Well the answer to that is if you actually want to hear what Aerosmith should sound like then go and get a copy of this, it positively swaggers.

Now Aerosmith got back to their roots last year with the 'Honkin' On Bobo release, showing what a great rock n roll band they still were, after years of MTVdom they still had the old groove, but I'm going to stick my neck out here, and I'm saying that this is the best thing Aerosmith have done in years, bar one thing.

As you can see from the track listing all the old classics are there, and there's also a couple of songs from 2001's 'Just Push Play, but there, plonked in the middle, is the lighter inducing, 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing'. On its own it's not a bad song, but in the context of this album it just doesn't fit , and I can only surmise it's been put there to entice the MTV generation to part with their hard earned dollars, which I suppose is no bad thing, if it then tunes them in to the real Aerosmith.

'Rockin' The Joint' is Aerosmith in the raw, it contains all the missed notes, bum notes  and dropped beats you get with an Aerosmith live show, but that's what makes this so appealing, it feels like your sat in the front row with a great big fat cheesy grin on your face.

If I recommend one about 'Rockin' The Joint' thing it's this. Get a copy of this version of 'Draw The Line', put it on your mp3 player, and see if you can walk out of your house in a straight line....
